Steve Delaney, former editor-publisher of The Hawk Eye in Burlington, is the new owner of the Guthrie County Times Vedette.
The ownership change took effect Monday.
Delaney is in the process of relocating to Guthrie County where he will live as the local owner of the newspaper.
Delaney served at The Hawk Eye from 2004 to 2017 when a national newspaper chain purchased the newspaper’s parent company. Prior to The Hawk Eye, Delaney was editor-publisher of the Garden City Telegram, Garden, City, Kansas, from 1998 to 2004.
Delaney was the recipient of the Iowa Newspaper Association Master Editor-Publisher award in 2016 and the Iowa Freedom of Information “Friend of the First Amendment” award the same year. He has worked as a reporter, photographer and editor at weekly and daily newspapers in Iowa and Kansas since graduating from the University of Iowa in 1982. He is a native of Dubuque.
“This is a great opportunity and I couldn’t pass it up,” Delaney said. “Community journalism has always been important to me and I pledge to continue that with this acquisition. We’ll cover the news and express our opinions on the pages of the Times Vedette. We’ll also continue growth of our digital offerings for readers and advertisers.”
Delaney takes over the Times Vedette from the family owned and Carroll-based Herald Publishing Company. Herald Publishing will continue to own and operate the monthly Lake Panorama Times in addition to the twice weekly Carroll Times Herald and Jefferson Bee & Herald.
“Steve is a long-time friend and colleague and highly regarded journalist,” said Douglas Burns, co-owner of Herald Publishing. “We are advocates of regional economic development and will continue to do what we can to boost the future of Guthrie County, which borders two counties in which we own newspapers. This is a friendly transaction with Steve and we are eager to cooperate with him on projects of mutual interest to our papers and regions. Having an owner living in Guthrie County is essential to the operation of a newspaper there. You will have that in Steve Delaney.”
Delaney, 58, has two grown children: Hannah will be a senior at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Connor will be a junior at The University of Iowa. He is also a member of the Iowa Army National Guard.
Delaney plans a community meet-and-greet in the near future.
