The AC/GC track team started their first official practice on Monday, February 25. The snowy weather has affected the team. Girls’ coach, Colin Shawgo, stated, “We make the best of what we have.”

As a result, the track team has been practicing mostly indoors. Practices usually last for an hour or less. The first thing the athletes do for their practice is warm up. After warming up, the team splits into groups based on the events they will be participating in. Then they start their individual workouts.

Coach Shawgo described the first week of track as good. He is coaching 25 athletes this season. Shawgo stated, “We have a lot of good athletes. It should be a fun year.”

The first meet is an indoor meet which will be held on March 18. Their first outdoor track meet is March 25. Shawgo said there have been some athletes with injuries, but they are minor. The injuries are mostly from getting back into things because, “it puts a lot of stress on the body.”

Junior Kate Crawford has enjoyed the start of track so far. She explained, “Everyone is always laughing and having fun even when the practices are tough.” The weather has impacted Crawford’s practices. She said her team has tried to find ways to practice outside, which isn’t always easy. Crawford would rather have outdoor workouts. She stated, “We only have one indoor meet, so I find it more beneficial to be outside in a variety of weather since we will face many different types of weather during our outdoor track meets; it is best to be prepared.”
