Ruth Ellen Lonsdale Covault was born in the family home in Dale City, Iowa, on August 25, 1923 to parents Fred and Cecile (Patterson) Lonsdale. Ruth was the youngest daughter of their six children. She passed away September 29, 2018 at the age of 95.
She attended country school at Dale City then Stuart High School from 9th - 11th grades. She had to transfer to Guthrie Center High School to finish her senior year since she had no way to get to Stuart. She lived in Guthrie Center with her sisters Barbara and Mary in their apartment and finished her senior year, graduating with the Class of 1940.
Ruth was working at the REC office when she met Lt. Gifford Covault in 1944. Their first date on New Year’s Eve led to their marriage on April 14, 1945, in Midland, TX. After World War II ended, Ruth and Gifford returned home to Guthrie Center to raise their family of three daughters - Cathy, Debbie and Susan.
Ruth worked as bookkeeper for Covault Builders for all the years they were in business and still found time to always be home when her girls came home from school. She was a wonderful mother, wife, cook, baker, and hostess.
Her activities included over 69 years in the American Legion Auxiliary and Past Presidents of American Legion Auxiliary. She was also active in Woman’s Club and UMW. She was an avid bridge player and club member for over 40 years. She also enjoyed many years of league bowling where she maintained a very impressive average.
All of her life was spent taking care of people, from her own children and grandchildren, to finally her husband who could not have remained in their own home all those years without her constant care.
Left to mourn her passing includes her three daughters, Cathy (Craig) Hinderaker of Guthrie Center, Debbie (Leonard) Wallace of West Des Moines, and Susan (Keith) Hjelle of Guthrie Center. Grandchildren Jill (Mike) Thomas, Cynthia (Doug) Helling, Joe (Kris) Arrasmith, Shelley (Andy) Lancaster, Andrew (Cathy) O’Donnell, Sarah (Steve) Blakley, and David (Paula) Sheeder. Great grandchildren include Jake and Ty Thomas, Zac Helling, Hunter and Keely Vasey and Bo Arrasmith, Abbie and Hailey Lancaster, Caroline O’Donnell, Shae Allers and Stevie Blakley, Regan, Morgan, Tessa and Bristol Sheeder, and two sisters-in-law Norma Covault White and Margaret Covault Webb (Dick) of Colorado. She also leaves behind a large family of nieces, nephews, cousins, and family friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, all her siblings, Charles, Bob, Mary, Barbara, and Joe and also by her husband of nearly 70 years, Gifford Covault.
Ruth was a quiet, caring woman who loved her family, her home, and her flowers. She was blessed to be able to live in her own home past her 95th birthday. She was a role model for how to be a good housekeeper, a good mother, and a good woman. Thanks be to God for the life of Ruth Covault.
Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, October 2, 2018 at the First United Methodist Church in Guthrie Center. Burial will be immediately following services at Union Cemetery in Guthrie Center.
