Ralph Nelson, 92, former Guthrie Center resident, died May 3 in Overland Park, Kansas.
A native son of Iowa, Ralph moved to North Branch with his parents Fred and Gladys Nelson in 1932. He was a 1944 graduate of Guthrie Center High School.
After graduation he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and was called to duty toward the end of World War II. Ralph married Vernona Carlson in 1948 and they resided in Guthrie Center for several years where he managed the United Food Market.
After living in Iowa, Arizona, Nebraska, and Minnesota, the family relocated to Kansas, where they owned and operated a business for many years.
Ralph lived in the Kansas City area for over a half century, spending the last seven years residing in the Kingswood Senior Living Community, 10000 Wornall Rd., Kansas City, Mo.
A celebration of Ralph’s life will be held there Saturday, June 8 at 11:00 a.m. in the Westminster Room with Rev. Kathleen Danforth officiating.
A visitation will follow.
Ralph is survived by a daughter; Jan (Royce) Mitchell, Indianapolis; sons: Rick (Karen) Nelson and Jim Nelson, Overland Park, Kansas; three grandchildren; Luke Mitchell, Jenna Mitchell, and Mackenzie Nelson, and two great grandchildren. Ralph was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and a brother, Phil Nelson.
