WCV no match for playoff-bound Panthers
The Panorama Panthers completed the regular football season last Friday in Panora with a 46-20 win over West Central Valley of Stuart. The Panthers ended the regular season at 8-1, good for second place in District 8 behind undefeated Van Meter.
The win was good enough to qualify Panorama for the Class 1A tournament play. On Friday, PHS travels to Dike-New Hartford for a first round game. With a win Friday, Panorama, the number eight seed in the 16-team Class A playoffs, would advance to play the winner of No. 5 West Lyon vs. No. 15 Osage.
Last week’s senior-night game was over by the first quarter, when the Panthers racked up 40 points. That was by design, according to coach Mike Kauzlarich.
“Our starters played approximately 8 minutes and then a lot of younger guys were able to get in and get some great varsity experience,” he said. “Our big thing was to get better and I think our 2’s and 3’s continue to show progress which leads to a great program and competitive team year after year.”
Panorama scored six touchdowns in the first quarter, capped by Luke South’s 88-yard kickoff return near the end of the quarter. Also scoring touchdowns for PHS included Dillon Bennett to start the scoring with a 1-yard run. Kade Kemble recorded a touchdown on a 6-yard run, Jackson Carstens on a 9-yard pass from Domonic Walker; Walker with a 20-yard run with Michael Allen adding the extra point; and Wyatt Clark on a 5-yard run. In the second quarter Austin Block scored on a 3-yard run.
WCV, which has been undermanned throughout the year, scored once in the first quarter and twice in the fourth quarter for the final margin.
“You have to tip your hat to the group at WCV for competing all year even through rough times,” Kauzlarich said.
Friday’s kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
“Reaching the playoffs is a huge honor, but we want to set the standard for Panorama football to be more than just qualifying. We are very excited to be on a field this Friday night competing against another great 1A team,” the coach said.
