Patrick Holmes Cochran, 80, passed away at his home in Bend on Wednesday, October 3, 2018, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Pat was born in Guthrie Center, Iowa on October 14, 1937, to Bert and Mildred Cochran. He earned a degree in Forest Management at Iowa State University and later, a PhD in Soil Science at Oregon State University. He began his career as a professor at the Syracuse University School of Forestry and later, he was a research scientist at the Bend Silviculture Lab, where he worked until retirement.
In many ways, Pat had the ideal job — spending his summers in the forests of Central Oregon collecting data from his ponderosa pine plots, and then writing his research findings in his office during the winter. His work is used as a resource for managing forests along the east slopes of the Cascade Mountains in Oregon and Washington.
Pat grew up fishing and trapping in Iowa and always enjoyed being outdoors. He would take his kids and grandkids fishing along the Deschutes River. He also enjoyed telling jokes, going woodcutting, watching football, shooting trap and spending time with his grandkids.
Pat was married to his beloved wife, Joan, for over 29 years, and they raised three children in Bend. Joan passed away in 1990 and later, Pat married Katy McMasters, and they lived in Bend for the remainder of his life. Pat and Katy celebrated 27 years of marriage on September 14, 2018.
Pat’s love for Christ was clearly evident to those who knew him and he had an intense desire to share Christ with others. He was an itinerant preacher and often traveled to small towns in Central Oregon to preach on Sundays. He served as an elder and adult Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church in Bend, and after retirement, he worked as pastor at Alfalfa Community Church and later, at Central Baptist Church.
Pat not only shared Christ with his words, but he displayed Christ in his actions by living a life of honesty, integrity, and humility.
Patrick Cochran is survived by his beloved wife Katy, his brother Dick Cochran (Ellen); his children, Tami Jackson, Wayne Cochran (Margret), Lyle Cochran (Susan), and his stepchildren Randy McMasters (Beverly), Cheryl Duncan (Steve), and Clayton McMasters (Shelly), along with 13 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at Central Baptist Church in Bend on Wednesday, October 10, at 9:30 a.m., and a graveside service at the Lewis Cemetery near Silverton, Oregon at 3:30 p.m. Central Baptist Church, 63214 Boyd Acres Road, Bend, OR 97701.
