A late Sunday afternoon fire extensively damaged The Port, the well-known restaurant located just north of Panora at Lake Panorama. Firemen from Panora and Guthrie Center were called to the scene about 4:30 p.m. “When we arrived fire was coming out of the roof,” said Brian Dorsett, safety officer and long-time member of the Panora Fire Department. The fire did not originate in the kitchen, but outside. “It started in the dumpster-break area and spread into the soffit and roof trusses,” said Dorsett. He said the blaze was centered in the kitchen area and roof. Dorsett
said the kitchen area had extensive damage and other areas smoke and water damage.
The business was closed for the day. The fire was discovered and reported by an employee who happened to be there.
Dorsett said in all about 30 firemen from the two communities fought the blaze. All the Panora fire equipment was on the scene including the ladder truck.
Since power to the area was shut off, occupants of two rooms in the adjoining Lakeside Inn were relocated.
Unlike previous days, conditions were not windy at the time. Firemen were on the scene about 2-1/2 hours. Also on the scene were Panora EMS and Lake Security.
The restaurant has been closed for an undetermined amount of time, and will not host several upcoming events including Trunk & Treat and the Halloween Party.
