GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Yet another historic season has been rewarded with a slew of postseason honors.

A pair of Panorama seniors were selected to the IGCA southwest all-district team last week, a nod to the Panther continued success and season-long stay inside the top 10 rankings.

PHS’ al-time leading scorer Payton Beck-man and fellow teammate Morgan Johnk were just two of 10 players placed on the prestigious Class 2A all-district squad

Beckman graduates as the school’s all-time leading scorer, finishing with a remarkable 1,557 career points, never once averaging less than 12 points per game in a single season highlighted by a career-best 19.6 points per game average this winter, which was tied for the ninth-best mark in all of 2A.

Beckman scored a season-high 34 points in a 63-26 win over Mount Ayr back on Dec. 20, a game in which Beckman drilled 14-of-23 shots and five three-pointers, tallying seven rebounds, seven steals and four assists.

Johnk will also join Beckman in graduation this spring. The senior averaged 10.7 points and 8.8 rebounds per game this winter in addition to handing out a team-best 53 assists. Johnk scored a season-high 19 points (7-9) thanks to a pair of three-pointers, five rebounds, four steals and three assists.

PHS romped through another regular season schedule, piling up a 20-1 record, falling just short of their third straight West Central Activities Conference title. State qualifier Des Moines Christian ended Panorama’s reign and 30-plus game regular season winning streak, knocking off the Panthers 47-37 back in January.

The Panthers were a game away from back-to-back trips to the state tournament, falling 50-15 in the Class 2A, Region 7 Final against Dike-New Hartford on Feb. 18.

The season-ending loss marked the completion of a remarkable run for the Panorama Panthers, a senior class which not only advanced to last year’s state tournament and just a game short of a return, they also compiled 45 wins and just four losses over a two year span.
