A breakthrough performance is sending a wave of girls’ to this weekend’s state swimming meet.
The Carroll girls’ swim team blasted their way to a third-place finish at the Ankeny Regional Saturday, Oct. 27 as they held their own against a swath of large schools.
The valiant effort produced six state-qualifying events, including the medley relay, the 400-yard freestyle relay, the 200-yard freestyle relay, the 50-yard free, the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard free.
AC/GC’s Mackenzie Campbell swam the second leg for Carroll’s 400-yard freestyle relay squad (3:48.85), which finished third in Ankeny, qualifying them for 23rd at this weekend’s state meet in Marshalltown.
Carroll’s Melea Axman qualified for four events, as she played a role on the medley relay and 200-yard free relay while she also qualified for the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly.
Jenna Currier qualified individually for the 100-yard freestyle while she also swam legs on the medley relay and the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Carroll scored 313 points, edging out fourth place Des Moines Roosevelt (296) while Ankeny (509) came away with the team title. West Des Moines Valley finished runner-up with 448 points.
The 2018 girls’ state swim meet is set for Nov. 2-3 at the Marshalltown YMCA.
